I track hiring across 185 semiconductor companies. For this analysis, I used 160 companies whose postings I verified within the last 24 hours.
Those companies currently list 32,507 open positions, and 26,195 are engineering roles.
The largest category is equipment engineering, with 4,096 openings across 79 companies. Add the 2,211 manufacturing and industrial engineering roles, and it becomes clear that the industry needs more people to make chips than many people realize.
The largest engineering categories
Equipment: 4,096 openings
Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering: 2,211
Applications and FAE: 1,372
Design Verification: 1,199
Infrastructure Software: 1,149
Process Engineering: 1,122
Hardware Systems: 1,097
For comparison, analog and mixed-signal roles, the focus of last week’s issue, account for 1,171 open positions, or about 4% of the jobs we track.
These jobs stay open for a long time
Half of all engineering openings have been posted for more than 58 days. More than a third have been open for over 90 days, and 8% have been open for over six months. Only 29% were posted within the last month.
The slowest-moving categories include EDA and CAD, semiconductor software, memory design, and process engineering. Their median posting age ranges from 70 to 86 days.
Infrastructure software moves fastest at 35 days, followed by systems software at 36, hardware systems at 42, and equipment engineering at 45 days.
A fresh posting date may not mean a fresh job
More than 3,200 engineering openings, or 12% of the total, have had their posting dates refreshed at least once. A refreshed job has been open for a median of 127 days, compared with 50 days for one that has not been refreshed.
One listing has been refreshed ten times.
The total also includes duplicate postings. About 8,136 postings, or 31%, share an exact title with another opening at the same company. Roughly 5,100 are the same job title posted in multiple cities.
Not a beginner’s market
Senior, staff, and principal roles make up 47% of openings. Mid-level roles account for 25%, while junior and internship positions together represent just 8%.
