The University of Florida’s Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering has announced the establishment of the Florida Semiconductor Institute (FSI), a hub intended to provide intellectual and technological leadership for semiconductors in the 21st Century.
The federal government is investing billions of dollars to bring semiconductor manufacturing back to the United States and advance domestic research in chip technology. FSI aims to enhance the state’s research and development within the sector and build and sustain Florida’s semiconductor workforce, which is currently the fifth largest in the nation.
The institute will coordinate activities to support the development and manufacturing of microchips in Florida, advance R&D, and educational opportunities, and foster public-private partnerships to enhance the microchip industry in Florida. It will also launch a comprehensive education and training program to serve universities, state colleges, vocational schools, and private industry with a vision to double the state’s semiconductor workforce within a few years.
